I just saw the movie from Weta, simply amazing, the fun is there, and technically astonishing!BIG UP!

So I remembered I worked on the game for nintendo 3DS at Ubisoft Barcelona, I had an amazing time there doing some 3D comics. Why 3D comics?
Because the game originally done in Montpellier for Wii version had cinematics which wre too heavy for the cartridge, so Barcelona studio had the great idea of making animated stereoscopic comics!

The job was to storyboard the comic, take screenshots in the editor and overpaint the lighting plus some compositing: adding Dof, color correction...here is a good example of what could be done:

Then I was assigned to the making of the intro scene.

The direction was to start the shot in the sky, end it in the street to a close up on snowy.

But it's 3DS so it's not actual heavy modelling 3d. I would only use 10 polygons and simulate the parallax with a matte painting, pretty challenging!

In the end, the result was satisfying enough so I was assigned to the outro sequence before the credits.This time the shot was starting in the Marlinspike cellar and the camera had to go through the all building and rooftop to end up in the sky.Very challenging!

In the end with the animation, it looked great!But the last shot was really hard to achieve because there was a lot of parallax simulation with angles bigger than 45° up and down.

But I don't have the shots!so play the game!

iPad+Artrage=speed painting

Hola!Here are a few tries with artrage on ipad.The experience is very interesting, but artrage lags a little bit, and painting with a finger is not so precise.

THe good thing is that it forces you to do as fast and simple as possible (the first one must be 2minutes the two others about 15mn which is too much).
The negative point is the display, if you paint outdoor you have to find shadow or else due to the sunlight, you just cannot see what you' re doing.

Living room, back from the dead...?

For the preproduction I handled the visual developpement, a part of the storyboard, and some guidelines about the rhythm and length of the different parts of the movie

When the character got modeled I started to work on textures and build a workflow to ensure the rendering and compositing will go fast and will be easy to handle.

After finishing all the Shaders and textures I started to light the scenes: I decided not to use any radiosity, final gathering or color bleeding which where taking forever to render, besides I had far much more control over what I wanted to lite or not.

So I went scanline, of course it took more time to set all the lights, but the results was much more convincing.the only time I used FG was for dynamic lighting: when the entrance door opens, the lighting is totally changing, so I combined a lightpass of FinalGather with my scanline rendering.

About passes: I usually worked with 3 groups of lights:

-the mainlight, strong principale source of light

-the backlight, to detach the elements and enhance readability

-the rimlight more neutral

I figured that the most important thing was to have control, to have control when compositing the passes, when the renders where done.

So for each group of light I assigned a color, that made 3 colors: R,G,B.

For each image, I had one passe of diffuse with lighting on + the same image but with the lights colored in full red, green, or blue, this way I could isolate each group in afterFX and create a control layer for each group of light:

I could play easily with the hue, exposure, glow , contrast...

Of course, I rendered the characters separately, skin and clothes in different passes and of course for each the RGB controlmap.
For the skin as I wanted a SSS avatar like effect, the simplest way was to use mentalray renderer, I also did different passes for the skin to control the SSS intensity on the tip of the nose, ears, jaws and fingertips beacause the old man really had to look fleshy.

With all that done compositing was a piece of cake.

I then needed to create the FX, blowing dust, fire effects, dust in air to give depth.

I used After fx particular, exporting rpf coordinate from 3dsmax.

For dynamic particles (knocking on a dusty door) I used sound frequency to animate the particule blow, I would transform the knocking sound into a percentage rate and use this rate as a basis for my particle emitter, with this done I could re use this technique for any dust emission really quicly.

Hi there, here is a quick making of this effect using 3ds max:

Btw this is snow on goggles for a skiing game on x360...

Ok, It goes like this:
1- snow is projected onto the mask and collapsing
2-it stays on the masqk and starts to move
3-the snow is being whipped of in 2 times, leaving water drops behind it

PART1:

Very first thing to do is to get references on flickr, youtube etc to study the behaviour and look of snow, or if it's snowing outside just put on some goggles and go snowball battle...

Then I created a new scene, with a camera and an unrenderable plane in front of it: it's mission is to receive the snow.
Then I created a PFsource:

particule 1 is emitted towards the plane
when particules reach the plane they stay stuck to it and slightly move along gravity.Also I don't want particules to go one into the other they need to pile.

This is all we need for part1 concerning the particle behaviour.

PART2:

Now we have the snow stuck on the front plane, we are going to take it off.
All we need is an object which on contact will get the particle stuck to it and have them following it's direction and speed.

For this I created a kind of hand, animated it to have some rythm in the removal, and used it in one of the particle flow parameters:

That's it for the particles, now we have planes or dots or whatever, behaving like wanted.

We need to create a "sprite" to make it look like snow:

In this case I created a shader with mentalray jsut thinking about making it look nice, not about rendering time, I will optimize it later on.

Then I did some testings with a picture behind it, but the refraction and all are for to long to render and as it is for a video game effects interacting with the ingame layout are not permitted, it is a video to be played ingame each time you get snow in your face.

So I used the shader created before to bake those two sprites with a basic material (spec gloss bump alpha and diffuse).

Back in 2008 at esia 3d we were working on a short 30s project...my very first idea was a squid drummer which I abandonned for the walrus and the sardin.

Still working on Living room's rendering (http://livingroom-themovie.blogspot.com/) I made those small sketches on the corner of my notebook, who knows it just might be my next animation project after graduation...

And for a change here is a little update on Living room's rendering!

En une heure environ, cette fois j'ai essayé d'organiser ma palette ça permet d'y voir plus clair et de bien choisir ses couleurs, même si c'est trop pastel (c'est pas comme sur photoshop là ça coule partout se mélange et on perd vite le contrôle).

Et voila une petite preview du rendu de notre "COURTRAJMé"!
Une petite satisfaction même s'il reste quelques textures à pondre pour remplacer ces chekers maps bien morne.
Le tout rendu en un temps record, c'est du scanline no mentalray, aller si peut être qu'il y aura une passe de mentalray avec du final gather pour réhausser toutes ces ptites accroches, mais c'est vraiment pour la goutte de liqueur sur la cerise sur le gateau!

Voilà un des derniers design pour le film qui n'a pas de nom, j'ai essayé de traité le rendu a la manière de Nico Marlet, the master du moment en character design. Je suis plus a l'aise sur photoshop quand même, ca tombe bien parce que la peinture ca coûte cher!

Il y a deux semaines j'ai décidé de mettre un pieds dans la couleur traditionelle...à l'acrylique!Voici donc ma seconde tentative en 45 minutes...une vrai guerre entre moi, un pinceau et une palette bordélique!

C'est un exercice vraiment intéressant, ca permet de bien organiser son taff et surtt la procédure, ça pousse a choisir ses couleurs et à les chercher, a la différence de photoshop ou j'ai peut être tendance à mettre des couleurs de manière automatique!

Avec Yan Le Pon, nous travaillons sur un exercice de storyboard du livre Coraline de Neil Gaiman.
Il s'agit donc de storyboarder( surprenant!) le passage où coraline trouve la clé qui ouvre la porte vers un un monde parallèle...
Voilà donc une petite illustration avant quelques visuels du storyboard...
